Heritage Open Days are a unique opportunity to visit cultural and historical sites that are usually closed to the public for free. In 2024, the event will take place in more than 50 countries across Europe, and here's what's worth seeing in six of them.

France, one of the founding members of Heritage Days, will offer visits to iconic sites such as the Elysee Palace in Paris, the residence of the French president, usually closed to tourists; the Louvre, where closed rooms will be opened to the public; the Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris, partially accessible for tours; the Château de Fontainebleau, where the private rooms of kings can be seen; and the Palace of Luxembourg, where the French Senate meets, with guided tours of the historic halls.

Germany will feature the Berlin Wall with guided tours of the closed sections and museum, Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, where some closed areas will be open to the public, the Reichstag in Berlin with access to the dome and parliament, Hohenzollern Castle, often closed for public tours, and the Bauhaus Museum in Dessau, which will offer unique exhibitions and events.

In Italy, Heritage Open Days include visits to the Colosseum in Rome, including the dungeons, which are usually closed to the public; the Vatican Gardens, open for tours; St Mark's Cathedral in Venice, with access to halls closed to tourists; the Doge's Palace in Venice, with tours of secret rooms; and the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, where secret corridors will be on view.
