Unusual trains can be found in countries all over the world. Cambodia runs ‘norris’ — bamboo platforms on railway tracks used for short journeys. In India, ‘toy trains’ such as the Himalayan Railway train are popular. And Japan has the maglev, which is a magnetic cushion train that uses magnetic attraction to make it float above the tracks. In some countries you can find very unusual buses. For example, in Colombia there are ‘chivas’ — colourful buses decorated with bright ornaments and music. In Latin America, especially in Panama, the brightly coloured ‘diablo rojo’ buses are popular, which translates as ‘red devil’ and are not only transport, but also part of the local culture. And in Cuba there is an unusual ‘camel bus’, a vehicle that combines a lorry and a bus and is named for its peculiar body shape.

In Bangladesh, ‘riverboats’ are popular for travelling along the country's many water canals, while in the UK, duck boats have been fitted with wheels and can now be found on the country's roads.

In some countries with cold climates, sled sleds are popular. In Russia and Canada, for example, dog sleds are used for travelling in the snow. In Finland and Norway, reindeer sleds are popular as part of local winter traditions. And in Madeira, up until the 20th century, there was only one way to get transport to the capital, Funchal — the toboggan sledge. The transport is accompanied by men in straw hats and white coloured suits. This 2 kilometre route still exists today as a tourist attraction.
