Architect Piet Blom's cube houses, tilted at 45 degrees, stand next to the Markthal, its vaulted ceiling painted with a giant still life of fruit and flowers. Locals joke that after a couple of beers, you can no longer tell whether it's the house that's tilted or you. Down below, between the market stalls, the air smells of gouda cheese and fried herring eaten straight off the counter, head tipped back.
Half an hour away lies Kinderdijk, a village with nineteen eighteenth-century windmills, listed by UNESCO.
